This study analyses the patterns of cooperation between Chinese individuals and local communities in establishing positive relations through economic activities in Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. Unlike previous research, which has focused on economic domination, identity conflicts and inequality in relations between ethnic Chinese and local communities, this study considers the mechanisms for establishing harmonious relations. This study employs a qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study methodology. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and documentary research, and analysed both inductively and deductively using Elizabeth Anderson's relational equality perspective. The results reveal three key findings. Firstly, the Chinese community's greater access to economic capital forms the basis of productive and inclusive power relations rather than serving as an instrument of domination. Secondly, economic relations between the Chinese community and the local community develop in an interdependent pattern characterised by trust, knowledge exchange, easy access to capital and mutually beneficial cooperation in the distribution of goods. Thirdly, Bugis cultural values such as sipakatau, sipakalebbi and sipakainge act as social mechanisms that prevent economic domination while maintaining balance in intergroup relations. These findings suggest that disparities in access to economic resources do not necessarily lead to relational inequality. Conversely, economic relations can become equal if supported by trust, mutual dependence and local cultural values that encourage respect and recognition between groups. This research enriches relational equality theory by demonstrating the important role of local culture in building relational equality in multiethnic societies.
